The legacy of puppetry at OxBow began in 1945 when Burr Tillstrom brought this captivating art form to the painting school and summer retreat nestled in the dunes of Lake Michigan. Over the next 35 years, Burr created a vibrant hub, drawing puppeteers from across the country to collaborate and connect in this inspiring setting.

In 2019, Hystopolis Productions, in partnership with OxBow School of Art and Artists' Residency, revived this rich tradition with the inaugural KuklaFest. The event brought puppeteers together for a dynamic conference and retreat, celebrating creativity, honing skills, and sharing work. The debut was a tremendous success, with many eagerly registering for the 2020 event—only to face an unexpected pause due to the pandemic.

In 2021, KuklaFest evolved into a fully virtual experience, broadening its reach and breaking new ground. We delivered an interactive, live event that drew an enthusiastic and engaged audience from around the globe.

Now, in 2025, we’re thrilled to return to Saugatuck, Michigan, for an in-person celebration of puppetry’s artistry and innovation. Join us as Hystopolis Productions presents KuklaFest Puppeteers’ Conference at OxBow once again—a gathering for connection, inspiration, and creativity in the beauty of Michigan’s artistic coast.

The Burr Tillstrom Documentary Project

David Balas and Jim Sellman Collection

When an unexpected treasure trove of Burr's personal artifacts was graciously donated to the Saugatuck Douglas History Center by David Balas and James Sellman, what started as a simple request to borrow Burr's puppetry sewing box for the conference, quickly grew into a larger project as we began working to digitize the collection.

Oral History Interviews

We are currently working to collect content and digitize the archives held at the Saugatuck Douglas History Center and the Chicago History Museum. The collections include photos, videos, records, artwork, journals, puppets, and more. We are continuing our oral history interviews with those who knew Burr or have personal stories to relate. Please contact us if you have something to contribute.
